Tuesday, July 02, 2019

After finishing second in 2018, Ashley Warren has gone one better at the weekends SA Cup, winning the 2019 title.

In the final, livestreamed on Facebook, the former South Australian resident drew Australia’s leading female bowler Bec Whiting.  With one match to decide the winner, Warren shot 222 and with Whiting bowling 192 it was enough to see Warren win his first ranked event of 2019.

Following the second stage, Warren was the highest qualifier after 18 games, leading the field by an impressive 235 pins from next best Jayden Panella, with Whiting 354 pins behind Warren.

In the opening match of the elimination rounds, Whiting faced off against fifth qualifier David Porto.  Whiting took the thriller 209-197 to progress.

Whiting then came up against South Australian, Matthew Krinis.  Krinis fought hard but Whiting’s experience shone in the pressure cooker to take the match 253-210.  The Victorian progressed to the final after a 224-185 victory over Jayden Panella in elimination 3.

The tournament also saw Matthew Krinis take out the skins in A squad, with Whiting taking the money in B squad in games 3 and 6 and Jayden Panella in game 9.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, SA State Manager Lyn Alexander said this year’s tournament was another success for Tenpin SA and the bowlers.

“A huge thanks goes to the sponsors with Training by Design, Mikal Howard Finance and City Realty as well as ZONE BOWLING who sponsored the prize fund.  A big thanks must also go to the ZONE BOWLING staff who did an excellent job.”
